Indonesian Batik Art History
Various opinions on the origins of batik art has been presented. But before outlining the historical, should be necessary to determine first what is meant by batik. In general, today, is the art of batik is a way of decorating fabric or textile by using wax as a patron to get on top of decorative cloth (wax resist precess). There are various ways to pour wax on textiles or other basic materials, but the main element is the use of liquid wax as a protector to resist infiltration of dyes into the fabric.
There are several opinions among historians that the origins of batik art from the world outside of this archipelago, such as South India, Ancient Egypt or Persia. But whatever the opinions of the researchers, something that can not be denied is the fact that the batik art experience top growth at an island in Indonesia, namely the island of Java. This is because the art of batik in Java reflects the philosophy of people's lives, so how to make batik and diverse motives intertwined with other art forms that live in the community.
"Soul" and the art of Indonesian batik is close to the art of puppets, traditional dance, and traditions in the royal palace, although the artists come from ordinary people. Belief and tradition still play a part until today, so for the people of Java and Indonesia, batik is not just a piece of lint incarnation of the body but the whole philosophy of life and its meaning. This is the main cause of the difference between the art of Indonesian batik with batik art from Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Africa, Europe or even America.
One more peculiarity of Indonesian batik, batik craftsmen using a tool called "Canting". Canting is not found in any parts of the world who also are familiar with the process of batik, and this is a tool which allows the fineness and beauty of the lines of Indonesian batik. Canting, a typical Indonesian batik equipment, made of copper and mounted on a handle made of small bamboo reed. Canting mouth size with different magnitude, depending on the size of the lines you want to create. Although nowadays many other countries that imitate the use of canting, but the quality and skills of Indonesian batik with large canting to the smallest canting can not be imitated. So canting that is one of the reasons the high quality of Indonesian batik art, which shows the same beauty on the outside or on the side of the fabric.
